FT.com / Comment / Analysis - And the loser is ...

I know:
A buh-buh buh-buh.
Goody girl, let down those curls. Let me give your heart a twirl.
It’s easy as A-B-C.
All the little birdies on Jaybird Street, love to hear the robin gotweet tweet tweet.
You’re not like anyone I ever knew.
We are the world. We are the children.
Mother and father raised us to be the best that we could be.
Neglection can kill like a knife in your soul.
You got me workin’ day and night.
The planets are lining up, we’re bringin’ brighter days.
The dream we are conceived in will reveal a joyful face.
To escape the world I’ve got to enjoy that simple dance.
We can make it right, hit the city lights, then tonight ease the lovin’pain.
I love the way you shake your thing especially.
Let me groove, let me soothe, let me take you on a cruise.
Lovely is the feeling now.
There’ll be no darkness tonight.
I took my baby on a Saturday bang.
Automatic systematic, full of color, self-contained, tuned and gentleto your vibes.
Once you get the beat inside your feet, there ain’t no way to stop youmovin’ good.
If you call out loud — will it get inside through the heart of yoursurrender?
Pretty baby with the high heels on, you give me fever like I’ve nevernever known.
The doggone girl is mine.
You gotta be startin’ something.
Naku penda piya-naku taka piya-mpenziwe.
She got position, she got just what it takes. Got a mojo in her pocket, get it ready just in case.
I used to dream, I used to glance beyond the stars.
Hold me like the River Jordan, and I will say to thee, you are myfriend.
Tryin’ to live without your love is one long sleepless night.
When I had you to myself, I didn’t want you around.
There’s something I would sure appreciate, if you can keep a secret...
You’ve changed and it’s showing.
I want you back.
Life ain’t so bad at all if you live it off the wall.
I’m from a world of disappointments and confusions.
If they say “Why? Why?” tell them that it’s human nature.
I can’t help it if I wanted to, I wouldn’t help it even if I could.
They’ll ruin your reputation! They’ll label you a flirt!
You seduce every man; this time you won’t seduce me.
Everyday I sit and ask myself, how did love slip away?
No one wants to be defeated.
Some things take time and shame.
Once all alone, I was lost in a world of strangers.
Billie Jean is not my lover. She’s just a girl who claims that I am theone — the kid is not my son.
If you can’t feed your baby, then don’t have a baby.
I was wandering in the rain. Mask of life, feelin’ insane.
I never knew but I was walkin’ the line.
I tried to keep my sanity, I waited patiently.
Damned indecision and cursed pride, kept my love for her locked deepinside.
What do you want from me?
I bet he never had a social life anyway.
I always feel like, somebody’s watching me.
I won’t give you reason to change your mind.
You’re preachin’ ’bout my life like you’re the law.
Just stop doggin’ me around.
They say I’m different, they don’t understand ... you got strangediseases, ah, but there’s no cure.
Mouth to mouth resuscitation, sounding heartbeats, intimidations.
You put a knife in my back, shot an arrow in me! Tell me are you theghost of jealousy?
Just because you read it in a magazine or see it on the TV screen, don’t make it factual.
The word is out, you’re doin’ wrong. Gonna lock you up, before too long.
Kicking me down, I got to get up. As jacked as it sounds, the wholesystem sucks.
Jew me, sue me, everybody do me.
I asked my neighbor for a favor; she said later.
Mother always told me, be careful who you love, and be careful of whatyou do, because the lie becomes the truth.
It seems you get your kicks from hurting me.
They really want to use me — and then falsely accuse me.
I am tired of this devil.
When the groove is dead and gone, you know that love survives.
I am the damned, I am the dead, I am the agony inside.
I’m starting with the man in the mirror, I’m asking him to change hisways.
You try to scream but terror takes the sound before you make it. Youstart to freeze as horror looks you right between the eyes — you’reparalyzed.
Whatever we say or do to each other, for now we’ll just make a vow tokeep it in the closet.
Hell all up in Hollywood.
We can sing songs of yesterday.
I’ve got memories to look back on, though they help when you’re gone,I’m well aware nothing can take the place of you being there.
Don’t waste your time on the past, no, no. It’s time you look to thefuture.
Like a comet, blazing ’cross the evening sky, gone too soon.
I used to dream, I used to glance beyond the stars.
You’ll never break me, ’cause I’m unbreakable.
Smile, though your heart is aching. Smile, even though it’s breaking.
If you ever look behind, and don’t like what you find, there’ssomething you should know — you got a place to go.
It doesn’t matter who’s wrong or right.
They do me for the money.
People say I'm not okay, ’cause I love such elementary things .... Haveyou seen my childhood?
Tell me why is it so? Don’t wanna let you go.

POP NOTES: Helm steeps Electric Dirt in American roots music
By Philip Martin
Sunday, June 28, 2009
LITTLE ROCK — The Band was an uncommon institution in that it had threedistinctive yet complementary vocal colors - Richard Manuel’s indigo ofbroken hurt, Rick Danko’s maroon melancholy and the earth-toned upliftof Turkey Scratch native Levon Helm, whose instrument was as homely andhuman as original sin, yet grazed by grace.
Richard and Rick are gone now, but Levon - the one who sang “The NightThey Drove Old Dixie Down,” “The Weight” and “Up on Cripple Creek,” toname but three - persists. And no longer do you have to go to one ofhis Woodstock rambles(or his Wildwood concert eight days ago) to hearhim.
In 2007 he released the remarkable comeback album Dirt Farmer (hisfirst as a solo artist since 1982 and a minor miracle in light of thethroat cancer hebattled in the 1990s). It won a Grammy in theTraditional Folk Category.
Electric Dirt, to be released Tuesday, continues the approach whilepaying it forward, incorporating traditional gospel, blues and soulingredients ginned through a timeless voice that transcends racialsignifiers and can roar like a Cracker Jehovah or keen like amoonstruck panther in heat.
There’s not a false note on this fiddle- and mandolin-driven record(which is less an arbitrary collection of songs than a tour of Americanmystery). It kicks off with a New Orleans jazz version of the GratefulDead’s “Tennessee Jed,” with a horn section puffing behind Levon’ssharp drumming and confident, exultant phrasing.
A stinging electric guitar riff by album producer Larry Campbell leadsus into a bluesy cover of the Staple Singers’ “Move It On, Train,”which inturn gives way to the album’s cornerstone, “Growin’ Trade,” aHelm-penned song about a disenfranchised farmer that lyricallyresembles Steve Earle’s “Copperhead Road.”
Helm covers a couple of Muddy Waters tunes - “Stuff You Got to Watch,”re-imagined as an accordion shuffle, and “You Can’t Lose What You NeverHad,” which employs a lead mandolin. Helm’s version of Randy Newman’s“Kingfish” benefits from a sly, jaunty vocal that transposes theoriginal’s acerbity into a con man’s celebration of self. (Newmansounded like he was on to Huey Long; Helm impersonates him.)
Helm makes his Woodstock neighbor Happy Traum’s “Golden Bird” soundlike a public domain ballad that you’ve somehow never heard before, with Campbell’s fiddle and an appropriately striving voice lending itthe air of an ancient field recording.
At 69, Helm might have lost a little lung power and shaved a bit offthe top end of his tenor, but he remains our most empathetic andshiver-inducing singer, a vocal actor able to convey nuances ofcharacter and circumstance through infinitesimal adjustments andaccommodations of breath and tone.
Like Van Morrison and BruceSpringsteen, Helm is most effective whenhe’s working the spaces between the notes, gliding and eliding, hangingjust behind (or slightly forward of) his tacked-down beat, smearing hisfrayed homespun voice over the tracks like salted butter.
Electric Dirt isn’t overly precise. It’s simply perfect.
